Haas Funny Car to the final round in Charlotte
The Haas Automation Top Alcohol Funny Car of Ulf Leanders went to the final round during the NHRA Carolina Nationals in Charlotte Sept. 18.
Ulf qualified as number seven in the 19-car entry with a 5,57 elapsed time, 11 hundreds of a second from the number one spot. In the first round he took a holeshot win over John Lombardo Jr. and he had the quickest reaction time of the whole starting field through eliminations with an average of 0,029 seconds.
In the finals ha had a 0,024 reaction time against DJ Cox Jr. 0,044 but lost traction forced Ulf to lift the throttle a short time that slowed him down to 5,60 against Cox winning 5,53. The margin of victory was only 0,046 seconds in 264 mph. Despite the final round loss Ulf was very happy with the weekend.
“This weekend has been a great relief for the whole team as we been struggling to find a gremlin-type of problem in the car for what feels like an eternity” Ulf stated. “Now we found it and it has been effecting my driving as well. It was a bolted chassis component whose unpredictable flex has caused all kind of problems. But in short it has made the car not respond to tuning in a consistent way and this included the clutch relief system slowing my reaction times. For a moment I asked myself if I more or less lost my driving skills as what ever I did I couldn’t get my reactions times back to how they use to be. So to have both the car and me as driver back in winning performance was like a win itself.”
The next race for the Haas Automation Chevrolet Monte Carlo Funny Car will be at NHRA National event Las Vegas, NV Oct. 27-30, NHRA Regional event Las Vegas, NV Nov. 4-6 and NHRA Finals Pomona, CA Nov. 10-13.
